There are three types of propulsion modes available to the lightcraft. These are ion-propulsion mode, Magnetohydro Dynamic (MHD) propulsion mode, and Pulsed Detonation Engine mode (PDE). Using these modes the lightcraft is able to take-off vertically and quickly accelerate itself into space. The ion propulsion system on board the lightcraft is for low-speed transport only. It is used mostly in the landing and take-off. The speeds which the ion-propulsion system can attain are equivelant to a modern-day train. The ion propulsion system is run by an array of solar cells which cover one side of the lightcraft.

PDE engines are for subsonic flight like the ion mode, but are able to propel the lightcraft much faster.. The PDE mode is nessecary to move the the lightcraft into MHD mode. PDE engines are capable of performing "hyperjump" manuever in which the lightcraft is accelerated at a speed greater than the unaided human eye can follow. This makes the lightcraft effectively seem to disappear. This mode along with MHD is powered by beamed-energy from an orbiting satelite.

The MHD engines are capable of accelerating the lightcraft orbital speeds within the atmosphere and are necessary for orbital flights. The MHD engine system includes a special 'expendable coolant' system that efficiently transfers waste heat from the rectennas to on-board de-ionized water, which is subsequently vaporized and ejected as steam.
